Sticks and stone may hurt my bones, but words will never hurt me. This phase is used, but many people do let words and others action toward them hurt them. Being offended is  wrongdoing against  either God, the law, or a person.  According to Isaiah 8:14 (NIV), it states, "He will be a holy place; for both Israel and Judah he will be a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.  And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare." In other words  people won't always accept his demands or the way of faith and when this happens they are offended.  Being offended at church can cause a person to leave.
